Premature folding isn't required, since even the worst hands in sanma can complete very quickly. I think you should only fold when you sense danger.
I think the main thing that trips up yonma players is how speed is now the main principle in sanma, as even riichi nomi gets to mangan easily with pei dora and higher chance of ippatsumo + ura. This heavily affects push-fold judgement and tile efficiency.
For example, in yonma, the main dilemma is "do I push my iishanten against riichi?". In sanma, the dilemma is "do I even push tenpai against riichi?", because hands can get absurdly expensive. It's common to fold even baiman dama tenpai near ryuukyoku, as 20% of all hands are damaten in the last row.
Tile efficiency is also weird in sanma, in that honors are now usually worse than terminals. You often see players in throne keeping terminals in shapes like 689 because penchans fill instantly, and they'd rather maximize closed efficiency instead of opening their hand for a cheap yakuhai pon.
There's a lot more I could write about how different sanma is, but maybe I'll save it for later.
