Forty Millenniums of Cultivation my first cultivation novel, i fear unless i find a really good one i'll be disappointed compared to how much fun this one has mashing together sci-fi and the cultivation genre. luckily it's so long i will probably not be done with it before the year is through. >>5616 I just finished "The Idiot" by Dostoevsky. Truly, a book only a Russian man could write. I wouldn't really recommend it myself because even though it's got very interesting characters and overarching story, the writing is a too long winded for me. I almost dropped it in the first 200 pages because of that, but if you look past it there's a lot of good here. Maybe this shouldn't have been my first book by Dostoevsky. I almost feel like this book is a crystallization of the author's personal beliefs, and without some context on the author himself from other books/his biography, I am missing parts of the story.
>> No.5793
>>5784 No, that's just how he writes, I'm afraid. You should still try Crime & Punishment, maybe even Demons, but I dropped Karamazov Brothers 1/3 in of the same reasons.
>> No.5795
>>5784 The Idiot is the best of Dostoevsky's body of work so in that sense starting with the best is a waste. On the bright side, you don't need to read anything else from him now because you experienced him at his best.

>>5616 Currently reading the latest chapter of this sloppa. Basically- /biz/-/jp/ anon gets isekaied into being a little girl in an alternate history Japan. Too bad it has a big confusion on what it's trying to be. Alt-history? Otome-game villainess slop? /biz/? Alt-history parts can't be appriciated if you're not a japanese history buff/economic history buff, /biz/ parts get old pretty fast too, since the /biz/ part goes likes this: >we merge karafuto bank with dingdonglingledong bank, this somehow deletes debt. >general manager tonegawa, do it for me. >"yes ma'am" >also i'm a singer and professional movie star in kintergarten it's got its moments especially in the first volume, but the more i read the more i get dissapointed at the wasted potential.

Reading the Pickwick Papers now, I'm gonna be Dickenspilled by the end of the year. I'll also keep reading Classroom of the Elite, it's pretty good for a light novel series. >>5784 The Idiot is like a refutation to Crime and Punishment, which is like the answer arc to Notes From Underground's question arc. Dosto's mature career is all about developing his ideas on human psychology, his works build into one another. It wasn't the best place to start, but the final crystalization of his ideas isn't until Brothers K.

I'm reading the Brothers Karamazov, P&V translation. Coming off the back of Woolf, Joyce, and Faulkner, I'm actually enjoying how simple and explicit it is so far. Even though I really think a good stream of consciousness is an incredible experience, I think I also like more straight forward narratives as long as they have strong characterisation. I'm not that far into it yet, but Brothers Karamazov is feeling a bit like a morality play.

I finished reading Shadow of the Sun. Kapuscinski provides a very close look at the state of the entire African continent throughout the mid 20th century when they were breaking free from European colonization. The English translation was excellent and I was gripped the entire time. His accounts go further than just staying with the wealthy, he goes out of his way to stay with local tribes and see the less glamorous parts of the continent. If you're interested in post-Colonial Africa then it is probably the best primary source.

>>6448 I have paper version of the book and got about 50 pages in, before I realized that it's the slowest I ever read any book, just because of sheer amount of nuances, details and traps the writer planted to catch the reader off guard. I postponed it for later when I get a bit more familiarity with reading heavy english books. For the time being, I'm going through the printed works of 'qtnm', one of OG SCP creators, his novels are interesting mix of high sci-fi with sheer brutality and down-to-earthness of Tarantino movies. https://qntm.org/vhitaos - this assortment of short stories is good starting point, you can read it online for free or buy in paper.

For nonfiction, A History of Private Life Vol 1. So far I have learned that the Romans didn't give a shit about blood ties when considering family and kids were mostly raised by nurses or tutors. At the same time a grown man couldn't sign contracts, pursue careers, or control his own money without paternal consent and wasn't considered a real adult Roman until his father died, which helps explain all the patricide they had going on. For webnovel shit, I am mostly caught up on I’m an Infinite Regressor, But I’ve Got Stories to Tell. This is probably the best gookslop webnovel I have read, much better than his previous work SSS Suicide Hunter which I dropped fairly early on. The MC's funny autistic obsession with referencing Romance of the Three Kingdoms all the time makes me want to get around to that. >>5655 I can second LotM as the best chink webnovel I have read. I read The Stranger last week. Didn't expect it to be about a literal autist.
I related really hard to the part where he thinks he could probably get used to living in a cell forever because there's so much to think about that one could simply spend the rest of their life living inside their own head.
>>11006 ^ I don't get it either. The people who have tried it always cite that it's eerily silent. I suppose it's a similar thing to "presence" in films, where you record the silence of the rooms the movie takes place in, because if you put a different silence recording over the room it sounds strange.
